Mester, the yearly graduate student academic journal of the Department of
Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA, seeks articles for its Special Issue to b=
e
published in June 2004, which will be devoted to:

Transformations: Re-imagining Identity

The centennial celebrations of Alejo Carpentier and Pablo Neruda, whose
works contributed to new representations of Latin American identity, serv=
e
to highlight how this concept has been re-imagined over the years. In thi=
s
Special Issue we seek to explore the topic of identity from a wide range =
of
scholarly points of view.
We welcome submissions related to identity including, but not limited to =
the
following:

Memory, Exile, Migration, Nationalism, Community, Ethnicity,
Gender and Sexuality, Visual and Textual Representations,
Language and Language contact

Mester publishes scholarly articles, interviews, and book reviews in the
fields of Spanish, Portuguese, Spanish-American, Brazilian and Chicano
literatures and linguistics. Mester also welcomes articles in Comparative
Literature, Critical Theory and Cultural Studies. Articles may be written=
 in
Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

Publication decisions are based solely on the quality of the submissions,
which undergo triple-blind review. Mester is dedicated to publish work th=
at
demonstrates a high level of scholarship, and since 1970 we have built a
reputation as one of the best student-run journals in North America,
publishing articles by established scholars alongside the best work of
graduate students. The journal is indexed in the MLA International
Bibliography of Books and Articles on the Modern Languages and Literature=
s.

To be considered for publication, articles should not exceed 25
double-spaced pages, including endnotes, and must follow the MLA guidelin=
es
(latest edition). The original and three copies are required for all work.
Please do not write the author=92s name on manuscripts but include it in =
a
cover letter, along with the title of the article, institutional
affiliation, email, and work and/or home address. The following categorie=
s
are accepted for reviews: academic books, linguistics, and new prose and
fiction, all works published within the past two years. Reviews should be
between 600 and 2,000 words in length. Publishers and authors are welcome=
 to
submit books for possible selection.

Submissions that are being considered by another journal or any other
publisher are not accepted. Original rejected manuscripts will be returned
upon request if sufficient loose postage is provided. The due date is
February 1st 2004, but early submissions are encouraged.
