FOUNDATION BOOKS, INDIA, strategic partner of Cambridge University Press in
India, invites book proposals for their new series, Contemporary Indian
Writers in English (CIWE).

  CIWE is a series of introductory texts focusing on critical interpretation
of contemporary Indian poets, short story writers, dramatists, novelists and
essayists. With Indian Writing in English an established area of academic
study and popular reading, there is a growing demand for clear, concise and
challenging introductions to these authors. The series plans a short volume
devoted to each author in Indian Writing in English.
   CIWE seeks to map the diversity of aesthetic approaches, representational
modes, ideologies, and cultural politics that contemporary Indian Writing in
English embodies. While the series focuses mainly on twentieth-century
authors, proposals for books on earlier writers such as Toru Dutt, Michael
Madhusudhan Dutt, Dean Mohammed will also be considered. Diasporic writers –
limited to first generation 'transplanted' authors such as Salman Rushdie
and Meena Alexander – will also be covered. The series ensures that new
writers such as Kavery Nambisan and Anita Nair will be studied alongside
senior writers such as Raja Rao and Anita Desai. The series thus reflects
the expanding canon of Indian Writing in English.

Format:
CIWE expects every volume in the series to chart the intellectual and
artistic development of a writer. As far as possible, each volume will study
all the genres a writer has worked with. Detailed analysis in lucid
language, a critical account of the 'location' of the writer in the
'tradition' of Indian Writing in English, and a bibliography will make the
volume useful as a starting point for readers to begin their exploration of
a particular writer. The volume will then serve as both a pedagogic text and
an introductory 'reader'.

Each volume in the series will be organised as follows:
(a) An introductory chapter, with a short biographical account of the
writer. A list of the author's works will appear on the inside jacket of the
book.
(b) Textual analysis of the writer's principal works. This could be
organised around individual texts or themes.
(c) A concluding chapter that assesses the achievement and position of the
writer in the genre and Indian writing in English.
(d) A full bibliography and webliography for secondary/further reading.
(e) Topics and issues for discussion.

Length: 65,000 – 80, 000 words. We expect the volume to be not more than 150
pages.

We invite scholars to send book proposals keeping the above in mind. We are
particularly interested in proposals that suggest new ways of reading and
critical analysis. There is no restriction regarding theoretical approaches,
provided the analysis is lucid and free of jargon.

Format for Proposal:
Your proposal should consist of :
1. Cover Sheet: Name, Institutional Affiliation, and full address for
communication (telephone, fax, email). Your name should not appear anywhere
else in the proposal, since this will be blind-refereed.
2. CV: A detailed cv, highlighting your expertise (mainly publications, with
complete details) in the field.
3. Proposal: This should ideally consist of:
(a) Plan of the introductory chapter.
(b) Tentative chapter organization.
(c) A list of individual chapters – including themes/issues and texts you
plan to discuss.
(d) Some details of the approach to be adopted.
4. Date of Submission of completed manuscript (from the date of
commissioning by Series Editor and Foundation Books).
5. Sample: One recent published writing sample (this will NOT be circulated
to the referees).

· We shall get back to you with our comments and queries as quickly as
possible. The commissioning and contracts will follow as soon as the
proposal has been finalised.
