CFP: Erskine Caldwell (3/31/04; collection)

I am interested in receiving detailed proposals (500 words) or whole essays
on Erskine Caldwell for possible inclusion in a collection to be published
in 2005 by McFarland. The goal is to elevate Caldwell's critical stature by
presenting fresh studies that measure his work fully-and
provocatively-against established traditions of American literature.

All approaches are welcome, but to complement other essays in the volume, I
am particularly interested in including discussions of the following topics:

Buddhist faiths, writings, practices and "Western" literature. Most
interested in proposed histories of Buddhism and literature within a
single period (20-c British, for example); investigations of the
influence of a particular Buddhist school or Buddhist text over time or
over several texts, investigations of groups of similar texts by
different authors, or investigations of Buddhism within the work of
single significant figures, like Thoreau or Kerouac. Less interested in
