Submissions are invited for a special issue of ESC (English Studies in
Canada) on physical or psychological interiors and the relationship between
them. While this issue will be based on the recent critical interest in
rooms and their furnishings, it will also extend into areas where an
=B3interior=B2 is a debatable but perhaps necessary metaphor. Some possible
topics:

Gaston Bachelard=B9s The Poetics of Space, E. A. Poe=B9s =B3Philosophy of
Furniture=B2);

< The nineteenth-century vogue for bric-a-brac, and its literary
representations;

< The semiotics of contemporary decorating trends such as minimalism;

< Rooms and their furnishings as animated or possessed; or as mirrors of
their occupants (e.g. the red room in Jane Eyre, James=B9s The Spoils of
Poynton, Georges Perec=B9s Life: A User=B9s Manual);

< Gendered interiors; the interiority of the body

< The inner spaces of texts;

< Analysis of metaphors for the postulated =B3inner space=B2 of the psyche
