CALL FOR PAPERS

Reading James

Responding, in part, to the readings and re-readings of Henry James that
circulated in the March 2004 issue of PMLA, this forum will take up the
topic of "Reading James."

Under that broad rubric, HJR hopes to include personal accounts of
reading, rereading, and misreading James, as well as critical studies on a
range of readerly topics including James's reading (its history &
influence, his accounts of reading, James's reading as re-vision, James's
library); James's influence on those who read him; the demographics and
character of James's readership; his depictions of readers and reading;
influential critical readings-and misreadings-- of James; Jamesian
theories of the reader; James's own rereading of his work in the Prefaces;
the difficulties and pleasures of the Jamesian archive.

Contributions should be submitted in duplicate and produced according to
MLA style. Please enclose return postage with your manuscript. One-page
proposals or short (10-12 pages) essays should be sent by March 1, 2005
