Embodiment and Environment in Early Modern Drama and Performance
Guest Editors: Garrett Sullivan and Mary Floyd-Wilson.

Topics might include how bodily or environmental factors --
ingestion, air, repose, or activity -- help define the subjects of
early modern drama; or explore how cognition, psychology, or
physiology are predicated upon environmental and cultural
situatedness. We are particularly interested in work that approaches
issues of subjectivity from an environmental perspective,
considering, for example, the intersection of and overlap between the
microcosmic "body" and the macrocosmic "environment." How do early
modern environments constitute selfhood, class status, gender,
ethnicity, or national identity? Papers that consider the
theoretical implications of the "ecological" for this era, its
cultural topographies, and its institutions would be welcome. We
also encourage submissions on the ecology of the theater itself;
papers could examine the exigencies of theatrical practice,
interpreting performance with regard to breathing, gesture, movement,
space, acoustics, or audience receptivity.
