A call for essays for a new collection on "The L Word"

Working Title: Representing Lesbians: Essays on"The L Word"
Edited by Sarah Warn (Editor, AfterEllen.com)

This book will be a collection of essays (2,000 to 4,000 words each)
written about lesbian/bisexual visibility and representation on Showtime's
TV show "The L Word." This book is geared towards a general audience, not
an academic one, but academics as well as journalists and other
non-academic writers are welcome to submit an abstract.

A wide range of topics related to "The L Word" are acceptable, such as:

o Appearance on The L Word (butch vs. femme, fashion, etc.)
o How lesbianism/bisexuality/race/gender/sexuality is portrayed on the series
o Deconstruction of specific storylines and themes, and/or fan reaction(s)
to them
o Mainstream press coverage and/or how Showtime marketed The L Word
o The show's reception within the gay community vs. broader America
o International reaction to The L Word
o How the lesbian characters/storylines on The L Word differ from other
American TV lesbian characters/storylines
Etc.

Please submit a one-page abstract/topic outline to
submissions_at_afterellen.com by August 15th, 2004, along with a few
sentences about your background; full essays will be due by September 30th
for those selected.
