Submissions are sought for a proposed volume of essays presently titled
Visual Culture in the Literature Classroom: Essays in Pedagogy and
Practice.

Essays should address how literature can be taught at the college level
in conjunction with visual cultural forms such as cartoons, tattoos,
illuminated manuscripts, the material reality of books/periodicals,
cover art and illustrations, photography, websites, advertisements, and
land/cityscapes. While innovative essays on film and painting will be
considered, preference will be given to essays that address
lesser-studied forms of visual culture. Essays may be theoretically or
practically oriented and should be readable by an audience of both
experienced and novice teacher-scholars. Ideally, essays will address
pedagogical issues and approaches that subvert the traditional privilege
given to verbal over visual cultural forms. Especially encouraged are
proposals that consider how literary and visual culture can be analyzed
conjointly to result in a more nuanced understanding and appreciation of
both cultural forms as well as of the social and political conditions in
which both are produced or consumed. Essays that consider cultural
production of any period and geographical location are welcome.
