Critical Anthology: Virginia Woolf and Music

"Novels," she repeated. "Why do you write novels? You ought to write music."
Rachel Vinrace's advice to Terence Hewet shows that the relationship between
music and text was an important concern for Virginia Woolf beginning with her
very first novel. Her active interest in music influenced her writings in
significant ways throughout her career. In 1940, she was writing to Elizabeth
Trevelyan: "Its [sic] odd, for I'm not regularly musical, but I always think of
my books as music before I write them" (Letters, VI, 425).

I am looking for essay submissions for a proposed critical anthology for
Indiana University Press, entitled _Virginia Woolf and Music,_ investigating
any aspect of the relationship between Woolf's life, works, and music. I am
particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches: comparative
literature, musicology, music theory.
Submissions on, but not limited to, the following topics are welcomed:

1. Any aspect of Woolf's use and knowledge of music, from classical to jazz and
street music.
2. The relationship between music and text in any of Woolf's works: her essays,
novels, short stories, diaries, letters.
3. Intersections of Woolf's fiction with works by classical and modern
composers.
4. Music and language in Woolf's works.
5. Music and the other arts (the visual arts, architecture, dance) in any Woolf
texts.
6. Woolf, Bloomsbury and music (Woolf's friendship with Robert and Elizabeth
Trevelyan; Saxon Syndey-Turner, etc).
7. Woolf's relationship with contemporary musicians such as Ethel Smyth, Donald
Francis Tovey, J.W.N. Sullivan and others.
8. Comparisons of Woolf's use of music with that of her contemporaries: James
Joyce, E.M. Forster, T.S. Eliot, etc.
9. Music adaptations of Woolf works.
