UTAH WRITERS COMPETITION
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Western Humanities Review (WHR), a quarterly literary magazine
published by the University of Utah, has announced a call for entries
to its twelfth annual competition for Utah writers.
Prizes are awarded in poetry and fiction. Each winner will receive
$500 and publication in the Spring 2005 issue of WHR. The entry fee
is $10 and includes a year-long subscription to the magazine. Checks
should be made out the Western Humanities Review.

Submissions are due by Thursday, November 1, 2004. Poetry submissions
should not exceed 10 pages or five poems, and fiction submissions
should not exceed 25 pages in length. Writers must be living in Utah
at the time of the competition and the material submitted must be
previously unpublished. Previous winners of the competition may not
re-enter in the category for which they won.

Entries should indicate which genre you are entering and should be
mailed to Utah Writers Contest, Western Humanities Review, University
of Utah, English Department, 255 S. Central Campus Dr., Room 3500,
Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0494. The writer's name, address and phone
number should appear on the cover sheet only. An SASE should be
included for notification of contest results. (Manuscripts will not
be returned.)

REGULAR READING PERIOD
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Western Humanities Review is also accepting regular unsolicited
submissions of original fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and
literary scholarship for the Spring 2005 issue.

The WHR has been in continuous publication since 1947 and published
the early work of some of our most well-known writers: Wallace
Stegner, Ursula Le Guin, Annie Dillard, Raymond Carver and many
others. Our work has consistently appeared in the Pushcart Prize
Anthology and the Best American Series. Recent contributors include
John Hollander, Michael Martone, Judith Grossman, Kevin McIlvoy,
Stephen Dixon and Majorie Perloff.

Please address your manuscript to the appropriate genre editor,
accompanied by an SASE, to: Western Humanties Review, University of
Utah, Department of English, 255 So. Central Campus Dr., Room 3500,
Salt Lake City, UT 84112-0494. Critical manuscripts should follow
the MLA Style Sheet, Second Edition, with notes placed on a separate
sheet following the text. We do not accept submissions by email or
fax; please only printed material.
