Call for Papers: The Figure of the Coquette

The proposed collection of essays seeks to explore the figure of the
coquette in the long eighteenth century (1660-1830), with the aim of
understanding and theorizing the cultural context that produced the figure,
her historical evolution, and her representation in European culture. We
are particularly interested in the coquette as a key site for debates about
women's nature and female roles during this period, ranging from the
misogynist critique of the coquette to explorations of her social power.
Comparatist analyses and cultural studies approaches are welcome, as are
essays addressing modern or contemporary rewritings of the figure of the

--history of the figure of the coquette (both real and imaginary/fictional)
--theorizing/defining the coquette
--visual representations of the coquette
--fashion and the coquette
--coquettes and bluestockings
--educational/didactic literature utilizing the figure of the coquette
--social etiquette and coquetry
--the coquette in popular fiction and theatre
--the body of the coquette
--medical discourses on the coquette/coquetry
--male coquettes
--innate vs performed identity

We will approach publishers early in 2005 with a prospectus including a
proposed table of contents based on abstracts of the essays selected for
inclusion in the volume.
