Anglo-Italian Renaissance Studies

Attentively considering the new critical perspectives arising from the =
most
recent trends of literary hermeneutics, this book series analyses early
modern English drama within the context of the European Renaissance and,
specifically, in the light of the impact and influence of both classical =
and
Italian cultural, dramatic, and literary traditions.

We particularly welcome proposals which consider early modern Italian
novelle and theatre as direct, indirect, and deep sources for, as well =
as
analogues and paralogues to, the construction of Shakespeare's drama,
particularly in the comedies, romances, and other Italianate plays. =
Studies
focused on other cultural transactions, such as travel and courtesy =
books,
the arts, fencing, dance, and fashion will also be considered. Book
proposals may also deal with early modern Italian and English dramatic
theories, the question of genre and decorum, the English response to
tragicomedy and Italian dramatic theories, the influence of Italian =
touring
companies and commedia dell'arte types, Elizabethan dramatists' reliance =
on
and resistance to classical rules, fixed genres, and dramatic =
conventions.
Special emphasis will be given to the manner in which early modern =
English
dramatists adapted Italian materials to suit their theatrical agendas,
creating new forms, and stretching the Renaissance practice of =
contaminatio
to achieve, even unconsciously, a process of rewriting, remaking, and
refashioning of alien cultures.

The series welcomes both single-author studies and collections of essays =
on
these topics and also invites proposals that take into account the
transition of cultures between the two countries as a bilateral process,
drawing attention to the penetration of early modern English culture =
into
the Italian world as well.

Proposals should take the form of either

1. a preliminary letter of inquiry, briefly describing the
project; or

2. a formal prospectus including: abstract, table of =
contents,
sample chapter, estimate of length, estimate of the number and type of
illustrations to be included, and a c.v.
