Seeking proposals for a collection of essays provisionally titled _Early Modern
Academic Drama: Text, History, Performance_. The editors are looking for four
critical essays to fill out the roughly ten-essay volume: the other essays are
currently at the revision stage and we anticipate shopping the completed ms. by
August 2005. We would therefore prefer proposals on articles that are either
already drafted or in progress.

_Early Modern Academic Drama_ aims to fill a significant gap in scholarship on
academic and university drama in the age of European Humanism. Aside from a
variety of individual articles published by a wide range of critics, Frederick
Boas, Fredson Bowers, and Alan Nelson have remained the dominant names
associated with academic drama, especially during the English Renaissance. The
essays in this new volume will represent innovative thinking and novel
approaches to an understudied phase of dramatic history.

Already included in the collection are essays that address a Henrician play in
Greek, a religious play by French dramatist Théodore de Bèze, an Elizabethan
comedy in the vernacular, the Parnassus trilogy, and Jacobean and Caroline plays
in Latin. We encourage proposals that discuss Continental academic drama, though
articles on English materials are certainly welcome. The methodologies and foci
of the current contributors vary considerably, and we would like to preserve
this diversity in the remaining essays that we accept. The thread that will bind
the volume together is drama that originates from within or concerns itself in
large measure with academic (not exclusively university) environments between
1500 and 1700.
