Citing Cities

Cities play a special role in theoretical constructs of the social order as well as providing a key part of history. Submissions to this special issue of EnterText, a refereed free-access online journal (www.brunel.ac.uk/faculty/arts/entertext) are invited by 1 July 2005 on their significance, in the past, present or future, whether as actualities, representations or myths. Suitable topics for discursive or creative work include:

* the city as cultural text
* utopias and dystopias
* rus in urbe: the green dream
* changing concepts of the citizen
* what price ‘civilisation’?
* the iconography of urban space
* the urban hinterland, service and mobility
* the place of the symbolic city in constructions of nation or religion
* urban decay and regeneration
* the city as locus of war and peace: parables of power
* cultural diversity and the urban mosaic
* the colonial in the postcolonial city
* global cities: the shaping forces
