Stages "Adorn'd with ev'ry Grace": Music, Dance, & Drama in London at
the beginning of the long eighteenth century

Scholars and performers working on topics related to the London theatre
world around the turn of the eighteenth century are invited to submit
essays for publication in an interdisciplinary essay collection, which
will engage and develop many of the same themes as the Florida State
University conference "John Eccles and His Contemporaries: Theatre &
Music in London, circa 1700" held in Tallahassee from February 24-27,
2005.

This collection will illustrate the richness and complexity of the
artistic world in which Anne Bracegirdle, John Eccles, William Congreve
and their contemporaries operated (circa 1675-1725). Projected topics
include performers' personae, court-theatre interrelationships (and
politics); gender and the mad song; Thomas Betterton and theatrical
practices; dance onstage; music and dance publications; intertextuality;
and performance practices.

Abstracts (c. 500 words) should outline the proposed essay as fully as
possible. Please note, this is not a volume of conference proceedings.
Essays based on conference talks will be expected to be substantially
revised (see "The Fine Print" below).

Abstracts for proposed essays must be received by April 4, 2005 to
receive full consideration for inclusion. Participants will be notified
by April 30th and sent publication specifications. Completed essays will
be due to the volume editor by November 15th unless otherwise mutually
agreed upon.

Ashgate is the projected publisher for this collection, as part of the
series Studies in Performance in the Long Eighteenth Century: Theatre,
Music, Dance.

The Fine Print [selected Ashgate requirements and information]:
        Submissions must be in English and be between 5,000 and 7,000 words
in length (including footnotes). They must be original and cannot have
been published elsewhere, or be intended for publication elsewhere.

        Submissions should be typewritten on one side only and
double-spaced throughout. Pages, including those containing illustrative
material, should be numbered sequentially.

        Illustrations must be supplied by the contributor and permissions
must be secured. All illustrations will be reproduced in black and
white. Figures and tables must be clearly produced and ready for
photographic reproduction. Music examples must be presented separately
from the text on paper (one copy) and on disk (one copy).

        In quotations the punctuation, capitalisation and spelling of the
original should be followed. Use single quotation marks, with double
quotation marks only for quotations within quotations. Quotations of 60
words or more should be indented. Permission will need to be obtained
from the copyright holder for quotations in excess of 800 words which
are taken from a text still in copyright.

Contributors will receive one complimentary copy of the volume on
publication.
