CFP: "Exiles and Expatriates" (10 September 2005; 23 - 25 February 2006)

the University of Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky
23 - 25 February 2006
"Exiles and Expatriates"
The International Lawrence Durrell Society invites proposals for papers
discussing the figure of the Exile and/or the Expatriate in 20th century
literature and culture.
Possible approaches to this topic might include:
* Writers as exiles/expatriates
* Characters as exiles/expatriate
* Conrad, Lawrence, Yeats, Joyce, Mann, Eliot, Hemingway,
Fitzgerald, Stein, Beckett, Bowles, Durrell, Milosz, Wiesel,
Arendt, Soyinka, Achebe, Ngugi, Said, Djebar, Rushdie
* Exiles as Travel Writers
* Politics of Exile
* Issues of Exile & the Canon
* Home versus Abroad
* Creative Geographies & Imaginary Homelands
* Cities Real, Unreal, & Invisible
* Communities of Exile
* Communities & Memory
* Modernism & the Marginal
* Language & Translation
* Throughout his life and throughout his writings, Lawrence Durrell
(1912-90) openly cultivated the role of Exile and ranged freely among
cultures, languages, and literary movements. This panel recognizes that
Durrell's presence in academic work and teaching is at present
under-represented--Durrell, in fact, remains an exile--and the ILDS
therefore explicitly seeks to cultivate potential points of convergence
between Durell's writings and academic investigations of other authors and
movements within 20th-century literature. If your paper does not primarily
address Durrell's works, please indicate possible points of connection with
those works.
