CALL FOR ESSAYS

FRAMING THE WORLD: ECOCRITICISM AND FILM

I am seeking scholarly essays for an edited volume on ECOCRITICISM AND
FILM. Please submit a 5 page essay proposal which includes a description of
the project, relevant bibliography, and author’s biographical statement
with selected publications by November 1, 2005. Email submissions accepted.

 Possible topics include but are not limited to:

* Ecocritical readings of particular films/videos, filmmakers, national
cinemas
* Theoretical explorations of the possibilities or limitations of using
film/video to raise awareness about environmental and environmental justice
issues
* Pedagogical uses of film in the ecocritical classroom
* Nature film, wildlife film, and ecocinema as genres
* Animals in zoos, domesticated, and wild
* The representation of landscapes, ecosystems, and natural features in
experimental, avant-garde, fiction or non-fiction film (documentary)
* The place of ecocriticism in cinema studies
* The place of film in the green curriculum
* Environmental Justice issues in film/video
* The production and uses of film/video as tools for environmental activism
* Native/First Nation issues in film that address the interrelationship
between humans and nature
* Native ecology, land reclamation, spirituality and nature
* Aboriginal films funded by the National Film Board of Canada
* Tourism/ecotourism, the environment, and native peoples
* Impact of globalization and modernization on lands and peoples
* Environmental film festivals
