Lumos 2006: A Harry Potter Symposium
Call for Proposals

Lumos 2006 will be a symposium for adult fans and
scholars of the Harry Potter novels. We aim to promote
scholarly analysis of the books, to provide a forum of
discussion for fans of those works, and to provide
professional development opportunities for teachers
and librarians.

Proposals are sought for presentations, papers,
moderated panels, workshops and posters on any topic
relating to the Harry Potter novels and/or the fan
community.

Literary and Media Studies:
Discussion of themes within the Harry Potter books and
films

Legal, Politics, and Ethics:
Exploration of legal and political issues related to
the texts, both within the world of the books and as
they relate to our own Muggle world

Social Sciences:
Critical responses to the texts through the lenses of
anthropology, sociology, psychology, folklore, etc.

Education/Library Studies:
Special programming for educators and librarians

Fandom Culture:
Discussions of the unique cultural issues arising
within the Harry Potter fandom.

Fan Creations -- Fanfiction and Fanart:
Examination and discussion of original fan-generated
responses to the texts.

In addition to formal papers, Lumos is seeking a
variety of presentation models, including
pre-organized critical panels, workshops and poster
sessions. Workshops are presenter-led, hands-on
explorations of methodology and craft, be it writing,
art, music, teaching or business. Poster sessions are
well-suited for topics that might lend themselves to
more visual presentations or more involved discussion
with a smaller audience. We intend that the workshops
and posters, in particular, focus on participation and
interaction.

There will be 2 days of programming. Proposals should
include the estimated time needed for presentation and
discussion. Workshops may be allocated up to 3 hours.

Proposals should take the form of a 400-500 word
abstract, as well as a 50-100 word summary for the
program book and a 50-100 word biography. All
proposals must be received by email by January 31,
2006. Presenters will be given the option to publish
their papers via CD-Rom, and papers will be
distributed in the Symposium Registration packet.
Approved presenters will need to submit their papers
by June 1, 2006 [tentative date] for inclusion in the
Proceedings. Please direct all queries to Carrie

HP Education Fanon, Inc. (HPEF) is a 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization founded in 2002 to promote and
produce educational, Harry Potter-themed symposia on
an international scale. HPEF has produced two earlier
events, Nimbus - 2003 in July 2003 and The Witching

endorsed by Warner Bros, the Harry Potter book
publishers or J. K. Rowling and her representatives.
