CFP: Teaching Eco's Name of the Rose (9/15/05; Kalamazoo, 5/4/06-5/7/06)
Teaching Umberto Eco's _The Name of the Rose_
Special Session
41st International Congress on Medieval Studies
Kalamazoo, MI
4-7 May 2006
Twenty years after its publication in English, Umberto Eco's _The Name
of the Rose_ remains a popular novel among medievalists and
non-medievalists alike. Its riveting account of a series of murders at
a mysterious abbey during the papacy of John XXII, amidst the tensions
of the Franciscan Spiritualist controversy, provides an excellent point
of entry to the cultural, philosophical, and theological milieu of
fourteenth-century Europe. _The Name of the Rose_ has much to offer
students in medieval studies courses, but it is not without its
difficulties. This panel seeks 20-minute papers that explore the
pedagogical advantages and pitfalls of teaching _The Name of the Rose_
in a variety of contexts, from introductory surveys to graduate seminars.
Please send 250-word abstract by email attachment in MS Word (preferred)
or by mail to the address below. Abstracts should arrive no later than
September 15, 2005 to be considered.
