Call for Papers

41st International Congress on Medieval Studies

May 4-7, 2006

Currently, the focus on the subject of panopticism is growing in its uses and its affects on modern society. We need only to walk up to an ATM machine and know that the "eye" of a camera is fixed upon us as we withdraw our money. The question becomes how much of this conept was familiar in the Middle Ages? Was the concept, perhaps not in name, understood? And how was it expressed or used in medieval society and to what purposes? This session seeks 20-minute papers concerning the concept of panopticism in the Middle Ages. It is hoped that a multi-disciplinary panel will illuminate this concept, such as literature, education, technology, art, politics, sociology--to name a few. If there is enough interest this session could work well as a roundtable discussion.
