Panel: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Turn-of-the-Century Speculative Fiction.

This panel seeks papers that will explore the ways writers used speculative fiction to resist or reinscribe discourses and practices of race, gender, and sexuality circulating at the turn-of-the-century. "Speculative fiction" is being defined broadly here to include multiple genres of imaginative writing, including science fiction, alternate history, horror, gothic, utopia, and fantasy. Papers that address works by writers of color, women, and queer writers are invited. However, papers that explore the writing of more famous speculative writers of the time and/or papers which employ more of a theoretical focus will also be welcome.
