The English Department at Mohamed I University in
Oujda, Morocco is delighted to announce its 2nd
International Symposium on Minorities and Minor
Literatures to be held 11-12 March 06. This year we
welcome interdisciplinary paper proposals on topics
related to "The Ethics and Politics of de/constructing
identity in literature, art, and the humanities".
We are particularly interested in the following:
The ways in which literary texts uphold or dismantle
the identity categories of race, nation, class,
gender, etc.; the strategies through which literary
texts or art works acknowledge and negotiate cultural
difference; and the ways in which they contribute to
an heightened sense of agency for and when acting in
the world.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the
following:
- (De)constructions of nation, race, class, gender in
literary texts
- Literature and the politics of
Empowerment/disempowerment
- "Cultural translation" and the (re)construction of
identities
- Disrupting Differences.
- Feminist Readings of Identity,
- Location and Power,
- Textual de/constructions of Cultural Identity,
- Visions of the Past: History, Memory and Identity in
Literature,
- Ethnic Narratives
- Transnational feminism and Gender
- Minority subject formations
- Migration and migrant literatures
- Hybridity and Ethics
- cultural encounters

The language of the conference is English. Please
email (no attachments) an abstract of approximately
250 words and short bio by November 31st, 2005;
completed papers expected by February 20th, 2006.
Please note that the reading time is limited to 20
minutes per paper (8-9 typed pages). Selected papers
will be published in our Second issue of Minority
Matters; participants are therefore urged to conform
their articles to the guidelines of the MLA style
Manual.

Mohamed I University offers accommodation for 3 nights
and food to all participants. Air travel will be at
the participants' charge. A participation fee of 75
USD is required from international participants,
Moroccan Nationals are required to pay a fee of 300
MAD.

Location:
The historic City of Oujda is a medium size city
(500.000 people) in the north east of Morocco, on the
Algerian borer and 30 miles south of the Mediterranean
coast. Closest other well known cities are the
Historic city of Fez, Tlemcen, Oran (Algeria), and the
Spanish-Occupied city of Mellila. Travelling into the
city is possible by train (from Casablanca, Marrakech,
Fez, or Tangier, check schedules online at
www.oncf.ma) or by air from Casablanca or from major
European cities (especially Paris and Brussels) as
many direct flights are available daily.
