CFP: Endurance Sports Culture Area (11/15/05; SW/TX PCA/ACA, 2/8/06-2/11/06)
CALL FOR PAPERS: ENDURANCE SPORTS CULTURE AREA
2006 Southwest/Texas Popular Culture/American Culture Association
(11-15-05; 02-08-06)
The 27th Annual Meeting of the SW/TX PCA/ACA
February 8-11, 2006
Hyatt Regency Albuquerque
Albuquerque, New Mexico
The new Endurance Sports Culture area of the Southwest Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Associations is now accepting proposals for papers and presentations at the annual conference. The impact of sports culture on people’s lives and on literature and film is well acknowledged, but study of sports culture is often concentrated on major team sports, the phenomenon of fandom, or societal pressures on individuals to have “fit” bodies. For this panel, we are interested in papers on all aspects of endurance sports culture (marathon running, triathlon racing, distance cycling, distance swimming, adventure racing, etc.).
The Area Chair is an English professor who is stepping outside her usual research area to chair this topic because she is also a marathon runner and six-time Ironman triathlete. The spark for this panel comes from the social aspect of these sports and how it can seem that you are nearly encountering the same people at events located 3,000 miles apart. Possible topics may include, but are certainly not limited to:
* Comradery at Races
* Intimacy among Training Partners, Groups and Clubs
* Endurance Sports in Film and Literature
* Addictive Aspect of Endurance Sports
* “Extreme” Sports Image Marketing and Appeal
* Outside vs. Inside (or how racing culture compares to gym culture)
* Off-Road (Trail, Xterra, etc.) vs. “Roadie” Culture
* Food & Endurance Sports (pre-race & post-race meals, “excessive” exercise as an eating disorder, food as fuel, food marketing to athletes, etc.)
* Socio-Economic and Educational Level of Endurance Sports Athletes
* Aging and Endurance Sports
To submit, send a 250-word abstract and brief biography by November 15, 2005. Both hard-copy and electronic submissions are welcome. Address all abstracts and/or inquiries to:
