Call For Papers: Entertainment TV After 9/11

Society for Cinema And Media Studies Conference (SCMS)
Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia
March 2-5, 2006

This panel will examine the impact of the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks on the
forms and functions of US entertainment television. Much has been written
about news coverage of the attacks and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq, but little has been said about the impact of these events on
entertainment television or about the role of entertainment forms in
legitimating and/or complicating the administration¹s war narrative. This
panel seeks to redress this absence. Papers addressing the rise, fall, and
mutation of program forms/formats are especially invited, though analyses of
post-9/11 content on TV are also welcome. Topics for this panel might
include:

*Reality Programming post-9/11: Militainment
*The Death (and Resurrection) of Irony on TV
*The Resurrection of the Spy Thriller post-9/11
*Religitainment and 9/11
*Western Revivals and 9/11
*Domestic Containment and post-9/11 TV
*Masculinity/Femininity on TV post-9/11
*Militarism on TV post-9/11
*Representations of Terror/Terrorists post-9/11
*Etc.
