The Science Fiction Literature & Theory Division of the International
Association of the Fantastic in the Arts would like to invite paper and
session proposals for the 27th Annual International Conference in Florida.

The 2006 theme is "Drawn by the Fantastic: Comics, Graphic Novels, Art &
Literature"

The SF Division focuses on all aspects of science fiction literature,
history, and theory. Archival, historical, critical, and theoretical
approaches are equally welcome.

Deadline for Submissions: November 30, 2005. Electronic submissions are
welcome.

27th Annual International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts
March 15-19, 2006
Wyndham Ft. Lauderdale Airport Hotel
Dania, Florida

Proposals for individual paper or paper sessions on the works of the Guest
of Honor, Charles Vess, the Guest Scholar, M. Thomas Inge, and the Special
Guest Writer, Kathleen Ann Goonan, are especially solicited.

The focus of ICFA-27 is on the media other than the written word or film,
including comics and graphic novels, web design and photo manipulation,
cover art and illustration, picture books and pulps, film posters and CD
covers, trading cards and tarot cards, cityscapes and landscapes, maps and
tattoos and costuming, not to mention art and sculpture.

The SF Division is especially interested on paper proposals on the visual
and graphic constructions relating to the genre of science fiction in
graphic novels, illustrations and cover art, painting, sculpture, comics,
cartoons, and cinematic works.

Possible SF topics might include but are not limited to:

Aliens and Alien Planets in SF Art/Illustrations/Graphics
Hugo Winning Artists (see end of email for list of artists)*
Visions of the Future/Earth in SF Art/Illustrations/Graphics
SF (Book) Cover Art & Illustrations (in any year or decade)
SF Magazine Cover Art & Illustrations (in any year or decade)
The "Colors" of Science Fiction
Visual Constructions of Technology
             Technology & Gender, Technology & Ethnicity, Technology &
Class, Technology & Sex

As always, proposals for individual papers and for academic sessions and
panels on any aspect of the fantastic in any media are welcome.

Film makers and artists as well as critics and scholars of science fiction
are invited to send proposals. The conference will feature Powerpoint
presentation of original art and run loops of short art house
movies/cartoons (no longer than fifteen minutes) as well as academic
presentations.

**Artists and film-makers who would like to attend and speak on their work,
as well as critical discussion of art and film, are welcome.**

You may submit a proposal to:

1. Present a single paper.

Please submit a proposal with the following information which is needed for
the program:

Title of Presentation
Full Name
Professional Affiliation
Snail mail address
Email address
Telephone number

**Audio-visual needs** (OHP, video/DVD)
Please note that no last-minute requests for AV equipment will be honored

300-word proposal that includes clear statement of the argument and
framework for the project, as well as identifying (in text references *or*
Working bibliography) major primary and secondary works.

2. Recruit and chair a paper session.

Please submit a proposal that includes the following information:

Session Title
Brief statement of focus
Three individual proposals that meet the criteria listed above.

The organizer may chair the session but in that case may not present a
paper. We are glad to help provide chairs for paper sessions if the
organizer wishes to present.

Information on the IAFA, conference guests, registration, and program
information can be found on the web site: www.iafa.org

Restrictions: No conference participant may present more than one paper,
nor may a session chair read a paper in his or her own session; nor may a
participant read a paper for someone in absentia. In addition to presenting
a paper, a participant may also serve either as a session chair or a
panelist at another session.
