2006 College English Association (CEA) Conference, San Antonio, Texas
April 6-April 8, 2006
Conference theme: "Reading the Regions | Writing the Regions | Teaching
the Regions"

Call for Papers for a newly formed Special Session:

Chairs and Associate Chairs (and former Chairs and Associate Chairs) of
University, College, and Community College English Departments are
invited to submit paper proposals for a special-session panel entitled:
"Chairing the English Department of the 21rst Century: Critical Issues,
Critical Challenges."

We hope to receive proposals on issues that address new challenges
and/or unresolved, ongoing challenges that face English Departments as
they forge ahead into a new century filled with internal and external
political, economic, and ideological forces that create and shape the
challenges with which Chairs and their faculty must contend as they
follow their missions, compete for resources, shape their curricula,
mentor their faculty, implement their pedagogies, meet the needs of
their students, and interact with the world outside of the academy.

CEA is a lively organization and its annual conference has always
celebrated scholarly activity in many forms: through sessions on
literary theory and literary interpretation, on writing theory, and on
pedagogical approaches and innovation in the writing and literature
classrooms. With this new addition of a session(s) on Chairing to our
annual conference, we hope to create an annual venue to discuss factors
that impact the atmosphere and procedures of and the governance in the
place where we do our work.

Papers must be no more than 15 minutes in reading length.

The submission requirements are as follow:

1) Proposals of 500 words for the "Chairing the English Department of
the 21rst Century: Critical Issues, Critical Challenges" panel MUST BE
POSTMARKED OR EMAILED BY 15 OCTOBER 2005 to Dr. Joseph Pestino,
coordinator of the special topics panels on Chairing, at the contact
information below.

2) Notification of acceptance by the session coordinator will be made
soon after the 15 October deadline. The proposed panels will then be
submitted to CEA by its deadline of 1 November 2005. Those who submit
proposals for the panel(s) on chairing issues will then be notified by 5
December 2005 of CEA's decision on acceptance of the panel.

3) All presenters must be paid members of CEA by 1 January 2006.

Proposal must include:

1) Phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and mailing address;
2) Your name and affiliation as you want it to appear in the conference
program;
3) A description of content and method, with attention to how the topic
addresses the "Chairing the English Department of the 21rst Century:
Critical Issues, Critical Challenges" focus of the panel.
4) Title of the paper as you would want it to appear in the conference
program.
5) A-V equipment needs, if any.
6) Special needs, if any.

All presenters please note:

1) CEA Membership is required.
2) Only one paper proposal per person for one panel will be accepted.
3) CEA can fund travel or participant costs.
