Looking Backwards: Re-reading Hollywood's Queer Images, 1969 – 1985

At last year's NEMLA, the GLBT caucus sponsored an engaging panel on the relevance of Vito Russo's landmark study of Hollywood cinema, The Celluloid Closet; this panel seeks to continue the discussion by focusing on Hollywood products from the years 1969 – 1985.

Screened Out, a recent book by Richard Barrios, examines in detail films mentioned in Vito Russo's The Celluloid Closet from 1900 – 1969, looking at them in a deeper historical context to reveal the imaging process of Hollywood. This panel seeks to investigate, in a similar fashion, the films that Hollywood created after the Stonewall riots to the start of the AIDS crisis – films that Russo believed were important because they exposed queer experience to America, but that he readily claimed were "homophobic." Is there anything positive that the GLBT community we can learn from films such as: The Gay Deceivers (1969); They Only Kill Their Masters (1972); Norman, Is That You? (1976); A Different Story (1978); Cruising (1980)? Are their political and social benefits we can use in re-examining films such as The Boys in the Band (1970); A Very Natural Thing (1973); Making Love (1982) Silkwood (1983); Lianna (1983); An Early Frost (1985) other than for their historical importan!
