Approaching Bo Carpelan’s Urwind (essay collection)
As those who have written on Carpelan know, there’s a dearth of critical material on his work, at least in English. This volume exists to help fill that gap, focusing particularly on his novel Urwind, which won the Finlandia Prize and is considered one of the principle texts of Finnish Modernism.
The book is under contract, to be published by the Research Unit for Contemporary Culture at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The Research Unit’s publication series began in 1986 and is multi- and interdisciplinary, publishing studies on contemporary culture and cultural theory. Currently, there are more than sixty volumes in the series.
At present, eight essays on Urwind have been accepted for publication. The editor seeks an additional two pieces, perhaps concentrating on Finnish myth and the novel, or the (post-) colonial aspects of Swedish presence in Finland, but other topics will be considered. Writers need not have read the novel other than in English translation.
An initial query should be addressed to briankennedy_at_sprynet.com. It is essential to put “Urwind†in the subject line of the email. Publication will be in the summer of 2006, so the deadlines for the project are tight. Please respond asap, but no later than September 15, 2005 with your initial query, which may be brief.
Please post this CFP or pass it along to other interested scholars.
Volume editor Brian Kennedy, PhD, is Associate Professor in the English Department at Pasadena City College.
