CALL FOR ESSAYS

The Games Science Fiction Plays (tentative title)

Submissions are invited for a book-length themed collection of essays
that explores the topics of games, sports and play in the field of
the fantastic.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

- representations of gambling, games, sports and play in the literature
and the cinema of the fantastic – both general and author-/work-specific
essays are encouraged;
- play with the reader/spectator/player in the relevant genres;
- fantastic genres as games with imagination/knowledge/science;
- computer/video games belonging to the relevant genres, with the special
stress on aspects of "game-ness" of stories they tell;
- franchises/media adaptations involving games: spin-off books from games,
game adaptations of literary and cinematic works, etc.;
- Role Playing Games belonging to the relevant genres;

The nucleus of the collection will hopefully be the topic-relevant papers
presented at the 2005 SFRA conference in Las Vegas, but there is room for
more essays.

Submissions should be 5,000-7,000 words long; longer essays may be considered
after prior consultation.

The collection will be published by Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Press
in co-operation with the Science Fiction Research Association.

To submit, send either a 300-word proposal or a full paper manuscript by
September 10, 2005. Full manuscripts of all accepted proposals will be due
some time in early November 2005 – the exact deadline will be announced in
early September.

The tentative publication date of the collection is early 2006.

Both hard-copy and electronic submissions are welcome.
