CALL FOR PAPERS:

INTERNATIONAL PYNCHON WEEK. V. IS FOR VARO TOO: EXPLORING
THOMAS PYNCHON'S HISPANIC (AND OTHER!) GLOBAL CONNECTIONS.

GRANADA, SPAIN, JUNE 13-16, 2006

This four-day event, slated to coincide with Granada's Corpus
Christi celebrations, will provide a forum not only for the
exploration of Pynchon's Hispanic connections, but also for
wide-ranging engagement with the totality of Pynchon's work to
date. We hope that some scholars will focus their studies on
the myriad Hispanic references dotted throughout Pynchon's
writing, for example:

Remedios Varo, the exiled Spanish painter
San Narciso, Spanish California
Mexico
"Mucho" Maas
The sacred vs. the profane
Joaquín Tristero etc. in The Crying of Lot 49
Spain as a global power in the 18th century in Mason & Dixon
Ships and Spanish colonialism
The Spanish Inquisition
The Black Legend
Jesuits
Z for Zarpazo and Zorro
Religion in general
Apocalypse
Paranoia
War, in V. and Gravity's Rainbow, for example, as in Franco's
Nazi connection The Hispanic background of some characters of
Vineland
Etc.

However, we welcome presentations on any Pynchon-related
subject, taking any critical or theoretical approach; studies
of individual texts or of Pynchon's oeuvre; studies of the
texts in themselves or in cultural, literary-historical or
other context. We also welcome presentations on other subjects
that may appear to particular advantage viewed through the lens
of Pynchon's work.

To facilitate a rich and stimulating exchange of views, all
presentations will be in plenary session. Each speaker will be
allotted thirty minutes.

Selected conference proceedings will be published as a special
issue of Pynchon Notes.

Held in Granada, the conference will also take in, as a
complement to the academic schedule, the Corpus Christi
procession on the Thursday, a tour of the Alhambra, and a visit
to the cathedral's royal chapel, where the Catholic Monarchs,
Isabella and Ferdinand, are buried and other archival displays.

Presentations may take the form of individual papers, media
presentations, or panels. Please submit proposals/ abstracts
(in English) of 500-750 words for individual presentations, or
of 1,000-1,500 words for panels. The languages of the
conference will be English and Spanish.
(Also, please specify what, if any, audiovisual or other
equipment may be needed.) Responses to inquiries and
notification of acceptance will be by e-mail.
