The Filson Institute for the Advanced Study of the Ohio Valley and the
Upper South proposes a two-day academic conference examining in
comparative perspective the nature and variety of North American
borderlands and their peoples from the sixteenth to the nineteenth
centuries. The conference will be in Louisville, Kentucky, at The Filson
Historical Society. =20

In recent years, a rich scholarship on North American borderlands has
explored the histories, cultures, and peoples in a variety of border
areas before 1860. Viewing borderlands as contested regions over which
no particular group extended dominion, the conference seeks to explore
common historical themes and issues related to the interaction of
peoples and cultures in these regions throughout North America,
including the Ohio River Valley, the Spanish borderlands from Florida to
California, and the northern boundaries between the French and English
empires. The mixing and clashing of peoples and cultures in these
regions-American Indians, African Americans, Spanish, French, American,
and English-provides a rich opportunity to explore both the ways in
which regional factors shaped and altered the interaction of cultures,
peoples and empires, and to examine the common themes arising from all
such cultural and imperial contact.

The program committee welcomes proposals from graduate students, junior,
and senior scholars examining the conference theme, including, but not
limited to the following topics:

* Racial and cultural mixing=20
* Imperial methods and designs=20

* Borderlands historiography=20
* Redefining borderlands=20

Conference organizers are particularly interested in comparative and
interdisciplinary approaches that seek to find thematic and interpretive
convergence in contemporary borderlands scholarship. Publication of a
selection of revised essays from the conference is anticipated.

Please send three copies of a proposal of no more than two pages clearly
outlining subject, arguments, and relevance to the conference topic, and
a vita of no more than two pages, to The Filson Institute Conference,

Proposals are due on January 1, 2006. Single papers or conference panels
are welcomed. The conference will meet in consecutive single sessions,
with three sessions each day. Papers will be placed on-line on the
Filson Historical Society's website prior to the conference. Funds will
be available to help defray some travel costs for presenters. For
