Call for Papers

On the morning of Saturday, February 11, the Boston Faith and Film Festival
will feature a "Scholar's Symposium" with presentation and discussion of
scholarly papers focused on the religious dimensions of evil on film. The
Festival invites papers that explore the theme of the festival, though
papers focusing on other issues related to the relationship of religion and
film will be considered as well. Proposals (not to exceed 500 words) should
be sent or e-mailed to: Christine Hoff Kraemer, Division of Religious and

02215, chk_at_bu.edu. Deadline for paper proposals is November 30, 2005.

Festival information

On February 10-11, 2005, the Boston Theological Institute in association
with the Boston University Institute for Philosophy and Religion will host
the fourth annual "Boston Faith and Film Festival" at the Brattle Cinema in
Cambridge.

This year, the festival will focus on the theme of evil, and a variety of
popular, classic, and independent films across diverse genres will be
screened to explore cinematic portrayals of evil and, in particular, the
religious dimensions and significance of these portrayals. So, for example,
how does cinema participate in the construction and deconstruction of
ongoing mythologies of evil? How does cinema ask and answer the question of
the problem of evil? Specific films to be screened will be announced at a
later date and on the BTI website (www.bostontheological.org).

Each screening will be followed by a dialogue session facilitated by guest
panelists. A scholar's symposium with papers focusing on the religious
dimensions of theme will be held on Saturday morning, February 11 (see
"Call for Papers" below). The Institute for Philosophy and Religion will
also offer a number of lectures during the fall semester on philosophical,
literary, and religious aspects of the problem of evil, some of which will
also focus on cinematic aspects.
