Proposals for 20-minute papers for a panel on Greece are sought from =
scholars working in the area of 20th century travel narratives within =
the disciplines of literary, historical and cultural studies. This panel =
will focus on the travel narratives of one or more of the four major =
writers on Greece in the 20th century: Robert Byron, Lawrence Durrell, =
Patrick Leigh Fermor, Henry Miller. Each paper may discuss one or more =
of the works of one or more of these authors. The panel seeks to examine =
how the new philhellenes construct Hellas in their narratives. I am =
particularly interested in critical discussions informed by postcolonial =
and/or new historicist perspectives. The panel will participate in =
Borders & Crossings VI, the sixth International Conference on Travel =
Writing, which will take place September 7-9, 2006, at the University of =
Palermo, Italy.
