The Eighteenth Century Now: Recent and Future Directions
An international conference for postgraduates and academics in the early
stages of their career

23-24 June 2006

This conference is an opportunity for postgraduates and academics in the UK
and around the globe to think about their work in the light of current
trends that influence the study of the long eighteenth century. The aim is
to open a dialogue between different approaches, theories, and
methodologies applied within and across disciplines and to encourage
reflection on the present and future directions in the study of the
eighteenth century and Romanticism. We invite 20-minute papers on any
aspect of the period, including its literature, history, philosophy,
science, art, visual culture, law, architecture, gardening, music, and

Topics to be addressed can include, but are not limited to:

- Enlightened Romanticism – Romantic Enlightenment - Politics, culture and
ideology - The construction and nature of evidence - Eighteenth-century
spaces - Alternative subjectivities: body, mind and the external world -
Text, context, language - Sexuality, identity, and genre - National crises
– international relations - Objectives and methodologies: teaching and
researching the eighteenth century - Histories and theories of the long
eighteenth century - The eighteenth century and the present

Please send proposals comprising the name and institutional affiliation of
the presenter, and a title with abstract (300 words) to Gary Day
( by 31 March 2006.

Accommodation close to the conference venue will be available for a number
of participants. Graduate students whose paper has been accepted for
presentation may apply for bursaries to cover the conference fee and
accommodation costs. Details about the bursaries will be available on the
conference website.
