Book as Object, Book as Idea: Women Owning Knowledge
Proposals are invited on the notion of "collecting" knowledge in the nineteenth
century via book-owning. How do the practices of women owning, borrowing,
swapping, stealing, and buying books (or other textual artifats) affect
mid-Victorian conceptions of both knowledge and possession? How are ideas
about the metaphoric, immaterial "possession" of knowledge altered or shaped by
the realities of women's material lives and their access to the embodied forms
of knowledge?
