CFP: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Theatre (ATHE) (11/01/05;
8/3/06-8/6/06)
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education will hold its 20th
annual conference August 3-6, 2006, at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in
Chicago, Illinois. As one of the Association's 23 focus groups, the
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Theatre Focus Group invites
proposals for the conference from scholars, graduate students, artists,
and practitioners. You may propose panel sessions with papers, poster
sessions, performances, seminars, panel discussions, or alternative
formats. Submissions may be either discipline specific or
multidisciplinary. We encourage innovation in session content and
structure.
Consistent with ATHE's overall theme ("Theatrical Milestones: Past
Legacies, Present Possibilities, Future Strategies"), LGBT's theme for
2006 is "Queering Generations." Our theme explores the possible
genealogies of queer lives, theatre, performance, and scholarship. How
do queers construct "generations," and what are the connections and the
divisions between different generations? How do the narratives,
ideologies, scholarship, theatrical work, and theatrical institutions of
one generation find "regeneration" in the next? How do our legacies
influence our present and our future, and how are systems of remembering
(and forgetting) operating? How do gender, race, class, disability, and
geography also play a role in constructing queer generations? And what
are the possibilities for individuals associating and disassociating
across different generations?
Though we will consider any proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance,
we are particularly interested in papers relating to our conference theme.
Individual Papers and Assistance in Forming Panels: ATHE does not
accept proposals for individual papers. To assist respondents in
arranging panels, LGBT will receive 150 word abstracts of individual
papers through October 10, 2005. Earlier submission is strongly
encouraged. Send the abstract by email to the FG Conference Planner
(see name and contact information below). If possible, the Conference
Planner will group papers with similar themes and topics and will
introduce 3 or 4 respondents to each other through email. The
respondents will then be responsible for submitting a panel proposal to
ATHE by November 1, 2005. We encourage respondents to use ATHE's
listserv or the LGBT listserv to develop full-panels before submitting
individual papers.
Submission of Proposals: Proposals should offer full panels and must be
completed online. Visit http://www.athe.org for forms and directions.
The final deadline for all proposals is November 1, 2005. Questions or
comments should be sent to the Conference Planner for LGBT.
Focus Group Conference Planner: Wendell Stone, Department of Mass
Communication and Theatre Arts, State University of West Georgia, 1600
Maple Street, Carrollton, Georgia 30118, wstone_at_westga.edu, or 678-839-4932.
Requests for Grants and Passes: All requests for Grants and Guest Passes
must be submitted by November 1 and must accompany the panel proposal.
Guest Passes are not awarded to persons who are affiliated with a
college or university. Grants are often awarded to cover the costs of
equipment requested through ATHE (see below).
Requests for Equipment: Visit ATHE's website for information on the
availability of and associated costs for AV equipment. If possible,
please include requests for equipment with your proposal. (Requests for
grants to cover equipment costs MUST be submitted by November 1).
Conference Registration/ATHE Membership: All presenters are required
register and pay the appropriate fees for the conference. Conference
presenters should be ATHE members unless they work outside the academic
study of theatre. Participants requesting and granted a Guest Pass by
the Conference Committee do not have to pay the registration fees, but
must still register, noting Guest Pass on the registration form
Additional Information: Information on membership in ATHE and on
conference costs is available at http://www.athe.org. Further
information on LGBT is available at http://www.athe.org/FG/lgt/index.html.
Debut Panel: A separate CFP for the Debut Panel (with a due date of
2/15/06) will be issued by issued shortly.
