CFP: Two Sponsored Sessions for the 41st International
Congress in Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo, 4-7 May
2006.

The Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program at the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites
interdisciplinary, comparative, and global
perspectives on English drama and vernacular theology
in the Middle Ages.

1. New Approaches to Medieval English Drama:
Performing the Religious Other

Possible topics might include but are not limited to:

•Representations of Islam and the East in East Anglian
Drama
•Christian-Jewish relations and dramatic traditions
•Representations of Catholics in Early Protestant
Drama
•Women and gender in Corpus Christi drama
•Paganism and antiquity in Saints' plays

2. Late Medieval Vernacular Theology in Context:
Arundel, Censorship and Biblical Translation

Possible topics might include but are not limited to:

•Margery Kempe and female spiritual authority
•Lollard texts and their reception
•Reconsiderations of medieval heresy
•Arundel's Constitutions and censorship
•Transmission of vernacular scriptural writing after
1409
•Exegesis, biblical hermeneutics, and translation
theory

Please note that submissions from graduate students as
well as independent and established scholars are
welcome. Papers will be limited to 20 minutes.
Accepted participants must commit themselves to
attending. Please submit, preferably by email, a
300-word abstract with official Congress cover sheet,
a brief vita, and any requests for AV equipment to
