Popular Food Culture: Call for Papers

We seek proposals for papers on cookbooks, celebrity chefs, food
television, cooking shows, eating contests, vegetarianism, and farmer's
markets. Papers may address some of the following or related questions:

* How do cookbooks and cooking shows help to make consumers aware
of contemporary issues in food culture? How might cookbooks and cooking
shows help us better utilize farmer's markets and small-scale family
farms?
* In what way do cooking shows either reinforce gender stereotypes
or resist them? In what ways do they replicate or reverse class
stereotypes?
* How do contemporary, popular celebrity chefs fight globalization
by helping us to "think globally and eat locally"?
* Where does the American public's fascination with eating
contests come from?
* What issues of nationalism are caught up in eating contests and
media coverage of them?
* Is vegetarianism becoming more and more popular? Why?

For consideration, please send an abstract of 750 words or less
describing your possible presentation. In addition, please include info
about yourself: past/present university positions, publications or
description of research, and contact info. Papers are acceptable in
English and Spanish. The proceedings of this panel will potentially
appear in a collection published by a major scholarly press.
