David Palumbo-Liu's _Asian/American: Historical Crossings
of a Racial Frontier" identifies Asian tropes as a recurrent
specter in American constructions of race. This panel
builds on Palumbo-Liu's book to investigate trans-Pacific
sites of cultural exchange between Japan and the United
States. Papers may focus on hybrid figures (including
writers, generals, presidents, or pop culture icons) or
historical moments (including catastrophic events and more
mundane moments of trade or cultural trends). We are
interested in how each national or "foreign" identity
changes meaning and focus in another cultural setting.
