CALL FOR PAPERS

Pennsylvania College English Association (PCEA) Conference

PCEA invites either panels or individual proposals for the 2006 conference, March 23-25, in Pittsburgh, PA. Proposals on any topic related to literature, film, composition, and pedagogy, are welcome, as are submissions of creative writing. Presenters must join PCEA in order to participate.

We also invite papers/panels for special conference sessions which will target this years theme Forging Connections: The Past Meets the Future. Such papers/panels may examine the past, present, and future in literature, film, composition, or pedagogy. There may also be special sessions that have as their foci texts and films that reflect the richness of Pittsburgh, past, present, and future.

Pittsburgh is a city of contradictions. While it is famous for the youthful exuberance of its college and university students, Pittsburgh lays claim to one of the oldest per-capita populations in the nation. Likewise, in spite of the city's attempts to redefine itself for the new millennium, it is largely still defined by its nineteenth-century economy of heavy industry. The neighborhood of Oakland is often seen as the intersection between the old and the new Pittsburgh. Oakland, home of three universities, offers a plethora of cultural activities. Just a short walk from the Wyndham Gardens are the Carnegie Museums and Library. Originally funded by the Carnegie steel empire, both the Art Museum and Museum of Natural History offer a glimpse into the past using wired-age technology. Recently, the Carnegie Library has been updated for the information age, so patrons can surf the net and skim the stacks all in one location. Near the Carnegie museums and library is Schenley Park.!
  Among other amenities, Schenley Park features the world famous Phipps Conservatory, nature trails, and tennis courts, as well as Frisbee and regular golf courses. While in Schenley, one can admire nature or check out engineering students
taking their newest robot on a test run. Additionally, Oakland features no shortage of restaurants and bookstores and offers a plethora of other dining, shopping, and cultural experiences.

Proposals, pertaining to the conference theme or to any other topic related to literature, film, composition, or pedagogy, due by January 13, 2006, should include the following information:

Title for the proposed presentation
Abstract of no more than 500 words
A-V equipment needs, if any
Special needs, if any

Panel organizers should include the above information for all proposed participants.
All conference correspondence should be addressed to the Program Chair.

Other Important Information

To preserve time for discussion, PCEA limits all presentations to 15 minutes.
Notification of proposal status will be sent around February 1, 2006.
No one may read more than one paper at the conference.

Note to Graduate and Undergraduate students

Graduate and undergraduate students may compete for the PCEA Best Papers Award in separate divisions. The awards are given in three categories (critical, creative poetry, creative prose) and carry a small monetary prize.

If you would like to compete in the Best Papers competition, please submit three copies of your completed work by regular mail no later than January 13. Papers received after this date will not be considered.
