CALL FOR PAPERS: APOCALYPTIC SHAKESPEARE FILMS

The 2006 Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Associations
Conference will be held in beautiful Albuquerque, NM, February 8-11, 2006 at
the Hyatt Regency downtown. Further details regarding the conference

Proposals are being accepted for a panel on "Apocalyptic Shakespeare Films,"
in the Shakespeare on Film and Television Area of the PCA. (See below for
details.)  Please send a 250 word proposal and a brief C.V. no later than
November 15, 2005 to:

Apocalyptic Shakespeare Films: Many Shakespearean films of the past decades
have presented apocalyptic concepts and images. Newer films, like
Almereyda's Hamlet, Taymor's Titus, Dogme's The King is Alive, or even
Morrissette's Scotland, PA, as well as more distant adaptations, such as
Edzard's As You Like It, Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well, and Welles' Chimes
at Midnight, grapple with anxieties regarding technology and cultural
shifts; the persistence of destruction and violence; the threat of
annihilation; the end of an era, time, and/or reality; the place of
spirituality and prophesy in the postmodern world, etc. Furthermore, the
cinematography and mise-en-scene in several of these films offer glimpses of
a post-apocalyptic world, a wasteland of literal nothingness or
technological alienation. I'm looking for papers that engage these notions
of apocalypse in cinematic Shakespeare and in his texts.
   
Please note that the deadline for registration for the conference is
December 31, 2005.  All participants MUST register online at the SW/TX
