Writing in context: French literature, theory and the avant-gardes

We invite proposals for 20-minute presentations in any discipline in human
and
social sciences investigating twentieth century French thought and
literature in its social, philosophical or artistic context. Special
stress will be laid on the relationship, traditionally strong in France,
between writing, art and politics in the context of avant-garde movements.
Proposals may also address interart questions, the relation between
writing and the other media, or between the arts and cultural theory or
philosophy. In addition, we welcome studies in intertextuality in the
French 20th century context.

The seminar will be bilingual (English and French). Professor Marina
Galletti from the University of Rome III will be one of the invited
seminar chairs. In the context of the symposium we will also organize a
public lecture on avant-garde and kitsch by professor, art historian
Rosalind Krauss (Columbia University).

Nous vous invitons à nous adresser vos contributions (20 minutes),
relevant des différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales, et
s'articulant autour de la problématique de la littérature et des avant-
gardes dans la pensée française du XXe siècle. L'accent sera mis, tout
particulièrement, sur les rapports, traditionnellement étroits en France,
entre l'écriture, l'art et la politique dans le contexte des mouvements
d'avant-garde. Sont également bienvenues les propositions consacrées aux
questions concernant le domaine de l'« interart », les rapports entre
l'écriture et les médias ou ceux entre les arts et la théorie culturelle
ou la philosophie. En outre, sont bienvenues aussi les propositions
concernant le problème de l'intertextualité dans le contexte français du
XXe siècle.

Le colloque sera bilingue (anglais/français). Mme Marina Galletti,
professeure à l'Université de Rome III, présidera l'un des groupes de
travail. Durant le colloque, Mme Rosalind Krauss, professeure et
historienne d'art à l'Université de Columbia, donnera une conférence
publique sur la question de l'avant-garde et le kitsch.
