the Call

We ask that you review the Call and consider submitting a paper, a panel, or
a workshop proposal to us by the new deadline.

If you do not wish to submit a proposal for the conference but wish to be
considered for the book, please contact Barbara Silliman regarding chapter
proposal deadlines.

An Edited Text for Publication

Battlestar Galactica (BSG): Panels and Edited Text

Our goal is three-fold:

First, to set up several different panels for the analysis BSG from various
theoretical bases;
        
Second, to select from the papers presented those that have potential to be
included in an edited text that analyzes both the current and the 1970s
version of BSG;

Third, to compile a representative number of essays from which to choose the

essays that will be included into the text.

BSG is a new groundbreaking television series, currently in its second
season, that is more than a simple remake: it is a re-invention, reflecting
American attitudes and culture in a post-9/11 world. The specialized areas
and theoretical bases for analysis include (but are not exclusive to):

Politics -- within the framework of the narrative as well as analogous to
modern
        governmental structure and the "post 9/11" society, governance of
former
        Education cabinet member now President along with the Quorum of the
        Twelve Colonies, democracy in exile

Religion -- Ancient Greek pantheism as a modernist religion and a political
force,
        Cylon monotheism as fanatical religion

Gender -- women in positions of power (President Laura Roslin) vs. men
        (Commander Adama), female Cylon duplicates (Six and Boomer), female
vs.
        male Viper pilots (Starbuck vs. Apollo)

Ethnicities -- Caucasian, Asian, African

Technology -- futuristic technology married with modern and retro technology

Sociology/Society -- the Quorum of the Twelve Colonies, love among humans
and
        Cylons, life in exile, living in fear

Psychology -- Freudian, Jungian, and Lacanian, especially, but other
theories are
        welcome

Military/Warfare -- Cylons vs. Humans, weaponry, strategies, mavericks vs.
        by-the-book soldiers, Martial Law, government/military compromise,
fighting
        a faceless enemy

History -- any and all perspectives are welcome

Comparison -- 1970s BSG vs. 21st century BSG

Fandom -- Fan responses to both/either version of BSG, acceptance and/or
        rejection of 21st century BSG
 
Please submit completed papers or 250-word abstracts. Please indicate if
your submission is for presentation at PCA in addition to the text, or for
the text only.
