Permeability and Selfhood

McGill University, Montreal

12th Annual Graduate Conference on Language and Literature

March 11-12, 2006

*Please note that this is a graduate conference.

The English Graduate Students Association at McGill University is soliciting
panels for its upcoming Conference on Language and Literature. The
conference will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on March 11-12, 2006. We
are pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Castle, Walter A. Haas Professor in
the Humanities at Stanford University, will be the plenary speaker.

Call for Panels

We are soliciting proposed panel topics or completed panels, comprised of
three to four members. This conference will address representations of
permeability and selfhood in and through literature. We encourage a wide
variety of interpretations on this theme. Some questions that will be
explored are: Is there a contradiction between selfhood and permeability? In
what literary works does the self stand particularly immune or vulnerable to
permeability? How does the process of writing, specifically autobiography,
aid in the development of the self? In what ways do readers function as
permeating forces?

Possible panel and paper topics include:

(Auto)biography and the possibilities of representation

The permeability of colonial spaces and urban centres

Group identity vs. individual identity

Technology/Communication as a permeating force

Alterity and intersubjectivity

Release and regulation

Trauma and the self

Bodily interiors and exteriors

Disease in literature

Phenomenology

Education

Approved panel topics will be distributed on the UPenn CFP site in early
November. Panelists will choose up to three appropriate papers and are
welcomed (but not required) to give a paper themselves. Panel proposals
should include a paragraph introducing the panel, followed by possible paper
topics or questions to be addressed. See the 2005 conference website for
sample panel proposals:

Please send panel proposals (300 words) or completed panel descriptions (300
words per paper) by October 21, 2005 to Tara MacDonald
