UPDATE: Word and Image (grad) (UK) (11/13/05; 2/17/06)
The Mind's Eye: Perspectives on Word and Image
University College London English Postgraduate Conference
17 February 2006
UPDATE: The conference organizers are pleased to announce Dr Peter de
Bolla of King's College, Cambridge, as a confirmed keynote speaker.
The fourth annual postgraduate conference at University College London
seeks papers that address the relationship between the verbal and
visual in literary texts.
- In what ways have texts and images responded to one another?
- What happens when texts meet with illustrations, diagrams,
photographs and maps, or when words themselves are subjected to
experimental forms of design and layout?
- How do words and pictures collaborate or compete for dominance?
- What happens at points of slippage between word and image?
- How do artists and illustrators interact with the written word?
- How can critics negotiate the different critical approaches taken in
talking about words and images?
- How have new technologies for the transmission of the written word
affected these relationships?
We are keen to include papers covering literature and images from a
wide range of historical periods, from illuminated manuscripts and
early modern typographies to concrete poetry, graphic novels and
e-text. Although the emphasis will be on literary texts, papers from
all disciplines are welcome.
Papers will be expected to be 15 minutes in length. Please submit
abstracts of 250-300 words to themindseyeconference_at_gmail.com by 13
November 2005.
