Dear Colleagues,
 This is a call for papers for an approved panel on "New Directions in
Partition Scholarship" for the 19th European Conference on Modern South
Asian Studies (ECMSAS 2006) to be held between 27-30 June 2006, at
Leiden, the Netherlands.

New Directions in Partition Scholarship

Till recently, academic accounts of the Partition of the Indian
subcontinent in 1947, which led to the creation of the new sovereign
nation-states of India and Pakistan and the largest population transfer
in modern history (involving an estimated 12-15 million people), have
focused on the grand narratives of "high politics." It is only in the
last decade – in the context of escalating sectarian violence and
militant nationalisms in the subcontinent – that scholars from the
humanities and the social sciences have begun to excavate the neglected
narratives of Partition and to analyze the traces left by this
foundational trauma on the national and regional cultural imaginaries in
India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. While building on the emerging critical
literature on the Partition of British India and its aftermath, this
panel will explore _new directions_ in Partition scholarship. We are
particularly interested in papers that do one or more of the following:
draw on hitherto unexplored archives (including vernacular
literatures/memoirs/oral histories/ethnographic
accounts/photography/film/theatre etc.); reflect on the relationship
between historical trauma collective memory and cultural texts; address
questions of regional specificity; use a comparative framework; deploy
interdisciplinary methodology.
