Call for Papers : "Race, Science, and Citizenship in the Americas"
MELUS (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the U.S.)
April 27-30, 2006

Presentation proposals are requested for a panel on "Race, Science, and
Citizenship in the Americas" proposed for the 2006 Multi-Ethnic
Literatures of the U.S. conference (MELUS). The conference will be held
April 27-30, 2006 and hosted by Florida Atlantic University.
Proposals must be received by November 7, 2005.
The proposed panel will examine "scientific" determinations of race in
the construction of citizenship at political, geographic,
legal/constitutional, or ideological borders. Proposal abstracts should
address problems, practices, or literary representations of racial
classification in relation to citizenship in the Americas in any
historical period. Possible topics include: the racialized body in the
discourse of citizenship or nationalism; the mutual constitution of
citizenship and racial taxonomies; racial science and national census;
science and naturalization/immigration law; uses of science in the
gender/racial coding of the citizen-subject; the mapping of borders
through or onto the racialized body; the anatomization of the body
(facial features, skin, blood) in the discourse of citizenship;
scientific metaphors in discourses of nationalism; relationships between
representations of the subject-citizen and the claims/terms of
genealogy, ethnology, anthropometry, evolutionary and social Darwinism,
anthropology, genetics, IQ testing, etc. Interdisciplinary and
single-discipline projects welcome.
