Games, Education, and Theatre/Performance

Seeking submissions for a panel at the American Alliance for Theatre and
Education (AATE) national conference, to be held in Washington DC July 26-30,
2006. (AATE does not overlap with the Association for Theatre in Higher
Education national conference.)

Our panel will explore the intersections of live-performance gameplay, such
as card or role-playing games, education, and performance. Questions that
might be considered include, but are not limited to: How and why do
live-performance games ask players to perform specific roles? What might be the
outcomes of these performances? How do games transmit specific ideologies and who
benefits? How may pedagogy usefully account for the intersections between
live-performance gameplay and self-conscious theatre, when considering elements
like impersonation and storytelling. Possible topics might include the
relationship between games and traditional theater forms, pedagogical or
classroom implications, constructions of player and non-player characters, the role
of narrative, and race/class/gender in relation to game content and playing.

Please submit short proposals (less than 300 words) electronically by
November 10, 2005 to:
