CALL FOR PAPERS:
THE MODERNIST ATTRACTION TO FASCISM
SPECIAL SESSION FOR LITERATURE AND POLITICS, ACA, APRIL 12TH-15TH, 2006.

FOR THE AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATION
PCA/ACA ANNUAL MEETING, April 12th-15th, 2006
ATLANTA MARRIOTT MARQUIS, ATLANTA, GEORGIA

I'm interesting in putting together a special session within the
Literature and Politics session of the ACA in the spring, focusing on
early 20th-century Fascism in the Arts, particularly Modernism and
Fascism in its various manifestations. I am most interested in the
question of the political attraction of fascism for modernist writers
during the early part of the century, but am willing to read
abstracts pertaining to fascism and the arts in other contexts.
Modernists on this list might include William Butler Yeats, Ezra
Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, D.H. Lawrence; so you can see that
the idea of "fascism" itself might be defined in various ways as well
(for some these writers were not directly connected to right wing
political movements). I would also be interested in papers that
challenge the common assumptions about the right-wing leanings of
such modernist authors.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: NOV. 1st, 2004.

The 2006 Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association
National Meeting will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, in

EMAIL ONE PAGE PAPER PROPOSALS (until Nov. 1st, 2005). Please send
these as Word attachments if possible, and readable on a Mac). One
page means a full page proposal so that I can understand what your
research entails.

Proposals must include all the following information to be considered:

1) COMPLETE NAME AND ACADEMIC TITLE (academic rank, grad. student, etc.)
2) PAPER TITLE (please keep these concise, they may be trimmed for
economy)
3) ACADEMIC AFFILIATION AND ADDRESS, that is
4) COMPLETE DEPT. AND INSTITUTION, WITH CITY, STATE, and ZIP CODE
5) PHONE NUMBERS: office and home numbers if possible (if I cannot
reach you, you may be dropped from the proposed session)
5) EMAIL ADDRESS for EACH PARTICIPANT; I need at least one working
email address for everyone. Please make sure your email address is
correct. If your email address changes, you are responsible for
notifying the Area Chair immediately.

If you must use ground mail, be sure you supply all the above
information; and please be sure to include phone numbers and email
addresses where you can be reached. If MAILING your proposal, please
use the office address below.

DO NOT FAX SUBMISSIONS to Sewall Academic Program. Call 303-823-6453 if
you have a deadline problem. There is presently no fax available for
submissions.

Please secure funding and be prepared to commit to the conference
dates before submitting a proposal. If you are a graduate student,
do not submit a proposal unless you have already secured funds and
can positively commit to the conference dates.
