=93The =93I=94 is a placeholder for the human voice.=94

This list, which could be expanded, testifies to the struggle we face =20=

as we try to assert ourselves in and through language. We find words =20
for ourselves or for others. And we act on those words. Therefore, we =20=

also again and again need to free ourselves from those words, rebel =20
against and reject them, extricate themselves from the languages to =20
which they belong. Through language we negotiate our differences, =20
assert what is important to us. We express and mask our respects and =20
contempts, and we claim and reclaim our dignity. The =93human=94 is a =20=

value in the sense of Nietzsche=92s Genealogie der Moral =97 a value =20
subject to constant and multiple re-valuations, as difficult to =20
surrender, as it is to assert. Any use of that term today requires a =20
rigorous examination and awareness of the field of struggles =20
surrounding the place of the =93human=93 in language. We seek =20
submissions, which explore instances of this struggle of the =93human=94 =
=20
as a value, and the search for alternatives. How have writers, =20
philosophers, artists or human rights advocates grappled with this =20
problem? We look for a variety of perspectives and media in the =20
arenas of discourse, culture, postcolonialism, race, gender, and =20
nationality.
